Springsteen was born at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey, to Adele Ann Springsteen and Douglas Frederick Springsteen. He grew up Catholic in Freehold, New Jersey, and attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School and Freehold High School. He briefly attended Ocean County College but dropped out. At age 19, he failed his draft physical due to a concussion from a motorcycle accident, likely avoiding service in the Vietnam War. His early bands included the Rogues, the Castiles, Earth, Child (later Steel Mill), Dr. Zoom & the Sonic Boom, and the Sundance Blues Band.
